Frequently asked questions

How is gratuity calculated in the UAE?

Under UAE labour law, full-time private-sector employees get 21 days of basic salary for each of their first five years of service and 30 days for each year after that. Part years are paid pro rata. The daily wage is your basic monthly salary divided by 30.

Is gratuity calculated on basic or gross salary?

On basic salary only. Housing, transport and other allowances are not included unless your contract says otherwise.

Do I get gratuity if I resign?

Yes. Under the current labour law, gratuity is calculated the same way whether you resign or your employer ends the contract, as long as you have completed at least one year of continuous service.

Is there a maximum gratuity?

Yes. Total end-of-service gratuity cannot exceed two years' basic salary.
